Sorry to say, some people treat their faith like an insurance policy. You keep your insurance policy in effect but pretty much ignore it. Then you get bad news from the doctor and need treatment or surgery then you pull out the policy, call the insurance company and make sure you are covered.

So some people will say, “Yes, I believe in God.” Then pretty much put their faith in the bottom drawer until they need it. A crisis comes along and they call out to God in the hope that God will cover them.

God is not an insurance policy. He is our Lord. Day by day we are to pray for him and seek his will for our lives. We strive to live his way. We seek to have communion with him. The Bible says we are to walk with God.

Jesus said he came to bring abundant life. How will he do that if he is out of sight and out of mind? God repeatedly says in the Old Testament and the New, “I am with you.” “Don’t be afraid, I am with you.” Jesus said, Lo, I am with you to the close of the age.”

In Psalm 119 we read, “I will never forget your precepts, for by them you have given me life.” God is good for us. All the time. Certainly he is our refuge in time of trouble. He wants to be. But he is not the occasional God. He is the always God. Our lives our best when we live in touch with him. Don’t put God in a bottom drawer, give him the throne at the center of your heart.

Our prayer: Lord help us not only to rely on you, but to live with you. Help us not to stumble but to walk according to the light on our path – your word. Help us to take every step with Jesus, in whose name we pray. Amen.
